When I stopped worrying about making the perfect dinner, something unexpected happened. We were sitting together more often. But sitting at the same table didn’t always mean we were connecting.
Some evenings everyone was tired. Some evenings the conversation sounded exactly the same.
“How was your day?”
“Fine.” “Good.” “I don’t know.”
The conversation ended before it had even started.
I eventually realized the problem wasn’t that my children didn’t want to talk. I was simply asking questions that were too easy to answer.
Curiosity Changes Everything
One evening, instead of asking “how was school?” I asked “what made you laugh today?”
The answer wasn’t one sentence. It became a story. Then someone else shared something funny. Someone remembered a silly moment.
Without planning it, dinner became more than a meal. It became a conversation. Not because I found the perfect question. Because I became more curious.
Questions I Come Back To
There isn’t one magic question. Different questions work on different days. Here are a few I return to often:
What made you smile today?
Did anything surprise you today?
What was your favorite moment today?
If you could relive one moment from today, which would it be?
What are you looking forward to this week?
Did anyone do something kind for you today?
What’s something you learned today that you didn’t know yesterday?
None of these questions has a right answer. That’s what makes them interesting.
The Goal Isn’t a Perfect Conversation
Some evenings my children answer in one sentence. Other evenings we end up talking long after dinner is finished.
I’ve stopped trying to make every dinner meaningful. I simply keep creating opportunities for connection.
Because relationships aren’t built through one unforgettable conversation. They’re built through hundreds of ordinary ones.
One Last Thing
Children don’t always remember the exact questions we asked. But they remember what it felt like when someone was genuinely interested in hearing the answer. Sometimes that’s the greatest gift we can bring to the table.
